Term:

A United States Senator holds office for six years beginning on the 3rd day of January, unless, by law a different day is appointed.

   

Qualifications:

To be eligible for U.S. Senator from Utah a person must:

        a) be 30 years old at the time the oath of office is taken,

        b) a U.S. Citizen for 9 years, and

        c) an inhabitant of Utah when elected.

 

Filing:

One U.S. Senate seat, held by Orrin Hatch, is up in 2006. Any person interested in becoming a candidate for this seat must file a declaration of candidacy with the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

 

A candidate must also file with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC).  For more information about FEC filing requirements, please contact the FEC.

 

Fee:

The filing fee is equal to 1/8 of 1% of the total salary paid for the full term of office to the person

holding the office.  The U. S. Senate filing fee for the 2006 general election is $1,239*.
